Interesting Facts / History
You may be surprised, but the roots of a product popular among modern buyers go deep enough into history. For the first time, the term linoleum, or rather, an oiled canvas, was used as early as 1672. Subsequently, as a result of the rise in the cost of part of the components, as well as the desire of manufacturers to make production less labor-intensive, in 1863 a certain Frederick Walton received a patent for the production of a new type of floor covering, which he called “linoleum”. The meaning of the name is transparent - the main raw material in the production of natural linoleum was linseed oil - in Latin 'linum oleum'. Thus, linoleum is a floor covering consisting mainly of natural raw materials that are renewable in nature: linseed oil, wood resin, wood flour and / or cork flour, limestone powder, colored and white pigments, jute fabric. | In the 50s of the 20th century, flooring manufacturers again faced a shortage of natural raw materials and replaced natural materials with polyvinyl chloride. Thus, linoleum is a completely natural coating, and PVC coatings can contain natural and non-natural components. However, in our country, as well as the CIS countries, linoleum is understood to mean PVC coatings. The Tarkett range includes all types of flexible flooring - including natural linoleum - a plant for its production is located in the Italian city of Narni. And most of the linoleum sold in Russia (PVC coatings) is produced in Otradnoye (Samara Region, Russia). |
What is linoleum?
PVC flooring is a flexible material based on polyvinyl chloride, as well as other natural and non-natural components. Two main types of flooring are determined by the type of objects and areas of application:
- household - for ordinary houses or apartments;
- commercial - for public and industrial premises.

Household linoleum - is one of the most popular flooring among buyers. Modern household linoleum does not change its size throughout the entire service life. A variety of widths allows you to choose the optimal footage for the purchase, and to place all the designs and colors in one place, you will have to rent a whole shopping center. Thanks to modern technology, it is possible to accurately convey the natural beauty of natural materials: wood, stone, fabrics. “Living Structure” - this is the name of the innovation technology for creating natural embossing from Tarkett (footnote to “Living Structure”). Understanding that appearance is important in floor coverings, manufacturers use an additional protective varnish - it not only preserves the appearance, but also makes cleaning much easier.

Commercial linoleum - is a PVC floor covering, which has a class from 31 to 43 according to the international standard BS EN ISO 10874. Such linoleum is suitable for installation in public and light industrial areas. The class system BS EN ISO 10874 is based on the intensity of use of various rooms. The class shows what maximum loads the coating is designed for. The higher the permeability and load on the floor in the room, the higher class should have a floor covering.
